MICHAEL KIENZER

6 March - 10 May 2009
Opening: March 6, 2009–noon
An ever-recurring theme in the work of Michael Kienzer is the material itself. His repertoire comprises semi-finished products, whose qualities he uses to achieve tension-laden, spatial, constructive and static results, as well as everyday objects, which he employs not in the Duchampian sense of the ready-made, but solely with a view to exhibiting their formal and functional propensities.
As the second artist participating in the MUMOK series Out Site, Michael Kienzer has created two works to be displayed in the open quad of the MuseumsQuartier.
The construction in the MQ forecourt, composed of 30 industrially manufactured doors, activates a discourse on the perception of public versus semi-public spaces, and also on the relationship between the inside and the outside, and between the closed and the open. The walkable installation, which can be entered and explored, arouses the viewer’s curiosity and plays with concepts of the mysterious and the invisible behind supposedly closed doors.
Kienzer’s second outdoor work, sited in the MQ’s interior courtyard, confronts the quotidian and the world of art, with three truck-drawn trailers accommodating perfect colour spaces in the primary colours. The work can be understood as both an ironic reference to modernism and as a statement regarding the role of the Museum Quarter as a stage for art.
