Against oneself
Jiz Lee is an American porn star with queer status. The community she is from and which she addresses is both porn proud and body conscious. In a tough industry she keeps the means of production for the production and marketing of the images of her body in her own hands. These are, because self-determined, images of strength. Strong surfaces.
Hans-Jörg Mayer paints them fluidly as floating picture of a picture alike fading posters washed-out in the rain. His watery way of painting builds up the tension of the medium, not of the motif. It is less about the image content than about the liquefaction of the paintings’ status as paintings. As a painter Mayer is concerned with the status of painting which can only persist, beyond the ever-continuing market-compatible anachronisms, if it works against itself.
