In the work Multifamiliar (2012), specially developed for the Showroom of Neuer Berliner Kunstverein, Aranda refers to a sociology textbook published in the 1960s and titled Living as Neighbors. In this book, two middle-class families are introduced in their living environment and also house-hunting. Both families are typical two-child nuclear families, the only one thing that “visually” distinguishes them is, that one family belongs to the US-American mainstream society and accordingly is treated in preference. Although the other family can prove similar employments and fixed salaries, as a result of their African-American background, their apartment-hunting proves to be very different. Accompanying the installation, a magazine will be published.
Julieta Aranda (born 1975 in Mexico-City) studied at School of Visual Arts, New York (Bachelor of Fine Arts / Filmmaking, 2001), and at Columbia University’s School of the Arts, New York (Master of Fine Arts, 2006). She now lives in Berlin and New York. Together with artist Anton Vidokle she founded the internet-platform e-flux, through which they have created projects such as the video archive e-flux video rental, and Pawnshop.They regularly publish the online magazine e-flux journal. Aranda and Vidokle have been implementing the project Time / Bank since 2009 – time as an alternative currency.
