While in New York this past May, I had the chance to visit the NYC 1993 show at the New Museum. As I walked through the gallery, I was struck by the quality and the magnitude of the works, and I began to reflect on what 1993 had meant for me.
When I opened the gallery in mid-October 1993, I was determined to start something special that would leave its mark on the art scene in Copenhagen. While I had confidence in the work that we started, I would never have imagined how the gallery would develop and grow over the next two decades and the incredible change that we would be a founding part of.
The exhibition Copenhagen 93 marks the 20th anniversary of Galleri Nicolai Wallner.
I have decided to dedicate this exhibition to the works that were formative both for me and for the Copenhagen art scene around the time that the gallery opened. This time was very stimulating for artists in Copenhagen, and I feel that it is a period that deserves to be revisited. This generation of artists continues to influence contemporary art today, and it provides an interesting point of view on modern culture.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank and acknowledge those that have been involved in this journey — everyone who has worked in the gallery, the collectors and curators who believed in the artists and their works that we have exhibited, and my friends and family who supported me along the way. I would also like to thank the artists for their collaboration and friendship, for their inspirational work, and for continuing to push both my own boundaries as well as their own.
