"The Road Home"

It is a great pleasure for Galleri Nicolai Wallner to present a new sculpture and a new series of mural sized watercolours by Peter Land.
Peter Land appears as a constant presence in his works, appearing either as himself or transposed into other characters that, however briefly, have to assume the unstable role of the artist. Surreal images become symbols of the artist's own powerlessness and attempt to come to grips with himself as an individual and a social being.
His new series of watercolours depict a contemporary pastoral furnished by different objects that convey feeling of loss of control and general direction. A labyrinthine system of pathways beset by crevasses, walls, and barriers are presented like the shifting views from a window of a train or a car. An edge a wood giving the viewer a sense of time and movement but also seems to point a certain psychological landscape marked by an undisciplined subconscious mind that constantly threatens to take over. Land's work articulates the fear of failure as a basic human and artistic condition. This reading becomes especially evident in the concluding drawing Vista that presents a steep cliff's edge from where a view of more never ending pathways can be seen.
In that sense the sculpture in the middle of the room offers perhaps the most optimistic point of view. A hand reaches out of the rubble like a sapling for light. Entitled Springtime, the sculpture seems to point to the fact that good times follows bad.
Peter Land has exhibited widely at galleries and museums in Europe and USA including Fundación Miró (Barcelona), Musée d'art moderne et contemporain (Geneve), The National Gallery of Denmark (Copenhagen), The Hayward (London), Louisiana Museum of Modern Art (Humlebæk), Moderna Museet (Stockholm), and Mori Art Museum (Tokyo). His work has also been exhibited at the Kwangju Biennale and the Venice Biennale. Land is permanently represented in various public collections amongst others Arken, Museum of Modern Art (Ishøj), Museum of Modern Art (New York), Museum of Contemporary Art (Helsinki), The National Museum of Contemporary Art (Oslo), Louisiana Museum of contemporary art (Humlebæk), The National Gallery of Denmark (Copenhagen), ARoS (Århus), and Musée national d'art moderne and Centre George Pompidou (Paris).
