Lines, colour fields and a white painting surface - these very fundamental means of depiction, which are central to the abstract painting tradition, are combined by Julius Heinemann (born 1984) in his large-format works in both familiar and unfamiliar ways. Between the numerous recognizable images, associations and assignations that his compositions awaken in connection with our tendency for art historical categorization - a bit of Cy Twombly’s poetry, a bit of Arnulf Rainer’s anger, a bit of Basquiat’s rambunctiousness, a bit of Abstract Expressionism with its viewer-related image-space-relationship - an irritating factor makes its presence felt.
However, Heinemann’s works are not a mixed bag of art historical intertextuality, but rather the escalation of abstract drawing, painting and spatial concepts - which come to a head in an objective, yet precisely considered discourse with painting traditions and the basics of creative methodology. His paintings are based on traces that are scrawled onto the works’ surface. However, they do not visualize the emotional state of the artist at the moment of his encounter with the canvas, but are simply an expression of his presence. This is not gestural painting, but painting as gesture: markings in the here and now that meld the aesthetic experience with the image carrier and position itself as physical counterpart, as the interstices between pictorial space and real space encountered by the viewer.
Nusser & Baumgart are very pleased to present new works by Julius Heinemann. Heinemann, who received his diploma from HGB Leipzig in 2011, is currently studying at the Royal College of Art in London within the framework of a postgraduate fellowship.
