Tamar Halpern’s works simultaneously explore, amplify, and disrupt the legacies of modernist abstraction. For Six minutes of Pleasure, Halpern has created a cycle of paintings that have been made using longer stretches of canvas. They were cut into individual paintings, concluding an intuitive process of adding, accumulating and manipulating images and meanings into an uninterrupted spatial continuum. The series features compositional elements as diverse as bulldozers, a fan, wallpaper patterns, dissolving liquids and a cat's fur in densely overlapping layers. Utilizing both digital and traditional photographic and reproductive processes, Halpern transferred and manipulated analogue and digital content onto canvas using diverse techniques of printing, collaging and painting to feature an enigmatically cinematic, syncopated cycle of paintings titled Six Minutes of Pleasure.
Tamar Halpern lives and works in New York. She received an MFA from Columbia in 2005. She was the subject of solo exhibitions at D'Amelio Gallery, New York (2011, 2010), Tony Wight, Chicago (2008) and White Columns, New York (2007). Her work was included in group shows at White Flags, St. Louis (2010); PS1, New York (2010) and Sculpture Center, New York (2010). Her work will be on view in the group exhibition The Cat Show at White Colums in New York from 14 June till 20 July 2013 and at Triple V in Paris till 13 July 2013.
