EMERGENCY ROOM BERLIN
Normally, an artist has to wait months or years to create an exhibition because it is necessary to negotiate with an art institution, find funding etc. This limits the artist with an urge to respond to the contemporary. Unless the artist makes graffiti in the street or is a capable hijacker of internet space, the artist cannot comment on the news without delay.
Emergency Room is an open space and gives the artists and opportunity to do just that. Through Emergency Room, artists react every day – they can scan the news media and react to the current debate. No comment or reaction is wrong. Artists can include newspaper, print magazines, internet screen dumps, broad cast television news, documentaries – the artists can make comments on all types of public communication and media news streams. If the artist wants to react by making a smell or a sound sampling that is also possible. They can make sabotage and attack the common knowledge distributed in the media or highlight details that would tend to disappear in the news stream.
To establish the Emergency Room in BERLIN only artists with a burning desire to react to the contemporary will be invited. The artists can work in any art form. The selected artists will be provided with a visa passport to enter the Emergency Room and install their comments. They have to work fast and with the same speed of the media.
Every day at 1 p.m. sharp, the art work from yesterday is removed to give space to the artwork of the day. Some days maybe 8 artist will turn up, and other days 1, only time will tell. Some days, the news can start a storm of reactions.
CONCEPT DESCRIPTION
A live 24H web cam will be a witness for the Emergency Room acts, with live streaming online. This is an ultra fast exhibition, so all comments will be filmed. It is very important that the exhibition is organised so there is a clear distinction between the art work of the day and the art work comments from yesterday. The archive will be retard – the word used by Marcel Duchamp to describe painting as a means of communication in delay. On the contrary, the art work comments of the day will be a live breathing body. The ritual of replacing yesterday’s artworks with those of today, is a passage.
Passage, Accentuation, and Actuality are three core concepts for the Emergency Room. Passage describes a movement, an action, and a transition face that holds vast potential because everything is still open. The accentuation describes the capability to focus and point out, it is a disciplined gesture that pins down a time and space for the comment as an event. The actuality of the accentuation harbours the necessity of presence and contemporality.
To include and activate visitors, there will be continuous visitor contribution extractions filmed and presented as part of the Emergency Room. The Extracteurs who conduct these extractions, ensures a constant high level of activity, people engagement and inclusion.
CONTEXT - BACKGROUND
Emergency Room was successfully launched in Denmark at Nikolaj Copenhagen Contemporary Art Centre in the spring of 2006, and will move to New York in 2007. The Emergency Room in Berlin will be part of an international network. It is important to open more rooms in other countries, to give artists a possibility to react in more cities.
MOTIVATION
Every country has several newspapers and broad casting channels, so every country should have an Emergency Room to give a voice to their artists in the debate and not make them wait a two years' delay. Every day, when artists jump up from their sofa with a burning desire to react to the news they can now exhibit at the Emergency Room. Artists should no longer keep their comments and art work for themselves, but install them right away, while the debate is hot – power of influence. Everyday at noon, the work from yesterday is replaced by new work. The exhibition will breathe as fast as the media.
MANIFESTO – by Thierry Geoffroy Colonel: “Based on the observation that the visual artist is left out of the debate about actuality, I believe that it would be healthy for society to open up Emergency Rooms in contemporary art institutions. The quality or aesthetic of the exhibitions is not important here. The importance lies in the possibility to show art immediately. The exhibition will function like the mass media and be in sync with the ongoing debates. The current art structure is putting the visual artist in a position of a ‘retard’ (delayed response). I believe that artists are the thermometers for society and that we have to give them a voice in real time, without delay, before it is too late. Politicians use visual communication more and more. Because political decisions are made fast, it is important that the contemporary art structure allows the artist to take part in the actual debate and compete with the ultra fast speed of the news. Artists are visual experts capable of decoding and synthesising visual material. The Emergency Rooms have to take place in public institutions like museums because the opinions of the artists are of public interest.”
