L’Ennemi de mon ennemi is a project by Neïl Beloufa, commissioned by Palais de Tokyo. It consists of a scenographic dispositive that represents a chaotic and fragmented vision of the ways in which history is written and in which power is legitimized in the contemporary era.
Drawing inspiration from official communication, memorials, museums of war, and political propaganda as well as contemporary events, advertising, and video games, the exhibition explores the interchangeability of strategies and discourses. In doing so, it plays upon the permanent ambiguity between good and evil, heroes and villains, postures and impostures.
The scenographic dispositive, specially created by the artist for this exhibition, integrates works of art, documents, images, artefacts, reproductions and objects that are constantly moved around by robotic elements according to an algorithmic programme. The dispositive thus allows for a constant reappraisal of possible associations, perspectives and meanings.
L’Ennemi de mon ennemi envisages the world as a field of contradictory yet comparable strategies. In doing so, it subtly questions the place of the artist within the multiplicity of powers that it evokes, between desires of autonomy, servitude, and propaganda.
After Les inoubliables prises d’autonomie in 2012, L’ennemi de mon ennemi is Neïl Beloufa’s second exhibition at Palais de Tokyo. This project offers a new means of apprehending the work of this young artist who has continuously questioned his own artistic practice as well as his means of production.

Neïl Beloufa
Neïl Beloufa (né en 1985 à Paris, où il vit) est un artiste francoalgérien. Il a étudié à l’École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts et à l’École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs à Paris ; au California Institute of the Arts, Valencia (États Unis) ; à Cooper Union, New York et au Fresnoy - Studio national des arts contemporain, Tourcoing (France).
Il a été nominé au Prix Marcel Duchamp en 2015, aux prix Artes Mundi (Cardiff, Royaume-Uni) et Nam June Paik (Essen, Allemagne) en 2016. Il est lauréat du Prix Meurice pour l’art contemporain 2013, du prix Audi Talent Awards 2011 et du prix StudioCollector 2010 remis par Agnès b.
Le Palais de Tokyo a présenté sa première grande exposition personnelle dans une institution française en 2012 (Les Inoubliables prises d’autonomie, commissaires Daria de Beauvais et Gaël Charbau).
Son travail a depuis fait l’objet de plusieurs expositions monographiques en France et à l’international, notamment à K11 (Shanghai, 2016), au MoMA (New York, 2016), au Schinkel Pavillon (Berlin, 2015), à l’ICA (Londres, 2014), au Hammer Museum (Los Angeles, 2013).
Neïl Beloufa a également pris part à la Biennale d’art contemporain de Shanghai en 2014, à la 55e exposition internationale d’art contemporain de la Biennale de Venise, en 2013, ainsi qu’à la Biennale d’art contemporain de Lyon la même année.
Son travail est présent dans de nombreuses collections prestigieuses dont celles du Musée national d’art moderne Georges Pompidou et du MoMA, ainsi que la collection Sammlung Goetz et la Julia Stoschek collection.
Neïl Beloufa est actuellement représenté par les galeries Balice Hertling à Paris, Mendes Wood à New York et Sao Paulo, Galleria Zero à Milan et François Ghebaly à Los Angeles
