AUGUSTINA VON NAGEL
"Planum Opticum
Photographies 1995-2006"
Augustina von Nagels’s images provoke in the viewer an alteration of his customary vision, thus, reminding us of an optical perception long forgotten: vision without the filter of profundity, distance and space.
Her work nourishes from compiling heterogeneous motifs and deconstructing iconographical archetypes that contributes to her singular way of looking at photography, turning it into illusion and tromp-l’oeil.
She appreciates absurdity, and what it reveals, by contrast, about falsity of appearances. The compositions of her work generates a sense of unease. What is exactly do we see? From this indetermination there arises a doubt about the reality of such representations, along with questions about their source.
The first plane and the background merge into one, creating a new figure. A surreal conglomeration, apparently without meaning, created by the fusion of the different planes that by dispensing with space profundity a new relation is created, a new fusion.
Augustina von Nagel has a taste for experimentation and a fascination with the ways in which images are made. Her permanent search and archival of objects, documents, things has its counterpart on the time she spends working on lighting effect, finding a precise angle or adjusting the details of the scenography of a composition.
Her work presents an unusual volume, depth and density that confer the images a physical dimension and a surprising life. Therefore, he Planum Opticum must only be understood as an image, as a reflection of our mobile and manipulated world.
Augustina von Nagel (Germany 1952) lives and works in Cologne. Her last solo shows include Bo Bjerggard Gallery, Copenhagen in 2004, the Musée des Beaux Arts, Nantes and Sabine Kunst, Munich in 2002. She has participated in Photo und Papier - Neues aus der Sammlung Grothe, Museum Küppersmühle. Sammlung Grothe, Duisburg in 2000. Her work is among others in the collection of the Louisiana - Museum of Modern (Denmark) y Museum Kuppersmühle (Germany).
