"Guía de Ruinas de Holanda"

Galería Pepe Cobo is pleased to present Lara Almarcegui ́s latest work “Ruins in the Netherlands” and the two projects presented at the Tapei’s Biennial.
Almarcegui documents empty lands and ruins in the contemporary city bringing back the city to the public conscience. The artist inverts the town planning process which tends always to renovation, in short, towards hiding or abolishing every sign denoting the passage of time.
The artist considers a building a ruin when it is open, from that moment the building is exposed to weather and time. Rain and vegetation can come in, invading it and making it theirs: “the merging process between nature and building has begun.”
Almarcegui’s interest in these spaces remains, as well, in the possibilities that they offer; their lack of functionality involves dangerous neutrality for themselves, remaining open to all kind of possibilities exposed to speculation. That is one of the reasons why Almarcegui searches, finds, registers and documents in order to generate a file which proves their existance and bring visible these invisible places.
In the main room we can contemplate some “Ruins in the Netherlands”, project consisting in the publication of a guide of the best modern and contemporary ruins of Holland with its own history, present and futur. In the work “Removing the outside wall of a ruined house, Quidongstreet Taipei 2008”, Almarcegui has demolished an exterior wall which hided a tiny in Tapei’s heart, return it visible from the street; whereas in “An empty terrain in the Danshui River, Taipei 2008” the artist, within the project’s framework of empty lands protection, tries to preserve intact this little abandoned island.

Lara Almarcegui was born in Zaragoza, 1972, but she lives and works in Rotterdam, Netherlands. She was invited to participate in Kwangju’s Biennial 2008, this year has shown her work in Sala Rekalde, Bilbao. Amongst her solo exhibitions we could stand out show in institutions like CGAC, Santiago de Compostela; CAC Málaga; FRAC Bourgogne, Dijon; or Stedelijk Museum Bureau, Amsterdam. Kröller-Müller Museum, Otterlo; MUSAC, León; or Fundación La Caixa, Barcelona, are some of the Collections where her work can be shown.
