"Qu'ils mangent de la brioche"
Gelatin is a collective of 4 artists: Wolfgang Gantner, Ali Janka, Florian Reither et Tobias Urban. They met for the first time in 1978 and never stopped to work together.
They live and work in Wien, Austria.
The installations and performances of Gelatin often imply the participation of the spectator with the objectif of freeing the emotions and the desires drawn aside by the society.
In the meantime, contrary to the Viennese Actionists who used the pain as liberation, Gelatin enjoy the sensual pleasures of the body, in a complete derision.
Their performances are funny, chaotic, full of sexual and erotic references. The artists tell stories, propose absurd theories, put themselves in scene in rascal situations which they improvise in front of the spectator.
Their works are full of humour which causes a burst of laughter, and thus allows the open-mindedness in all lightness.
Invited at the Biennal of Venise in 2001, Gelatin devasted the Austrian Pavililon with a non identified material which main virtue was to put the spectator in osmosis with the places.
The Emmanuel Perrotin Gallery has been transformed in a swimming pool for the exhibition "Le cadeau" in 2002. Closer to a sauna, the game consisted in bathing in a human tide. The basin was composed of ten opulent people overlapped the ones with the others forming a circle. A person only being able to take seat in this improvized basin.
For the Biennal of Moscow 2005, the artists hung some wooden toilettes on one of the façades of the builduing and showed their "pipi cone": a stalactite of ice, yellowed by the urine, which hung along the museum.
"Gelatin's work is like a good restaurant. It looks good, it smells good, the waiter flirts with you and when you leave, you feel happier" they declare.
