Though much loved by artists, watercolour, gouache, and ink & wash media enjoyed only modest critical attention in the 20th century. Even with the renewed interest in drawing practices in the early 1990s, critical art writing often relegated these "traditional" media to the peripheries of painting and drawing.

As the work in Fluid Boundaries demonstrates however, today’s artists use the “left of centre” status of watercolour, gouache, ink & wash (and now inkjet) art to their own advantage – quietly producing works that thrive in the margins. Here, erotic imagery, depictions of private thoughts and dream-like settings flourish alongside expressions of cultural fears and violence. Subtle portraits of fragile identities and imaginative excursions into the past are deftly rendered on paper, while other pieces move beyond the picture plane and extend into three-dimensional space – or are transformed through performance.

Fluid Boundaries celebrates artworks that pass effortlessly between foreground and background, positive and negative space, colour and line. It also points to creative practices that explore the porous borders of disciplines with works that range in subjects, genres, and media.
