ART LOS ANGELES CONTEMPORARY: BRIAN BRESS AND MICHAEL REY

Cherry and Martin is pleased to present a two-person exhibition of new works by emerging Los Angeles artists Brian Bress and Michael Rey.

Brian Bress’s HD monitors show a soundless loop in which isolated actors perform, obscured by sculptural suits. Through the creative processes of drawing, sculpting, etching, cutting and assembling, the frontally facing performers acknowledge not only the traditional fourth wall, but also amplify the existence of the very object that contains their actions. As the creative process unfolds and reveals, tension is wound and unwound through the endless act of making and erasing.

Michael Rey's painted Plasticine-on-panel forms avoid categorization; in doing so, they provoke us to talk about the language of painting and sculpture, our sense of our own bodies, and modes of representation. Rey’s use of shape and color has evolved toward a non-hierarchical relationship within his compositions; his attentiveness to surface insists on the ‘objectness’ of the wood panels on which he layers Plasticine and oil paint.

Brian Bress's solo exhibitions include the Utah Museum of Fine Arts (Salt Lake City, UT, 2015) and the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver (Denver, CO, 2016). Bress has recently had solo exhibitions and projects at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (Los Angeles, CA); Museo d'arte contemporanea (MACRO) (Rome, Italy); Santa Barbara Museum of Art (Santa Barbara, CA); and New Museum (New York, NY). Brian Bress lives and works in Los Angeles, CA.

Michael Rey received his BFA from the Ringling College of Art and Design, Sarasota, and his MFA from Art Center College of Design, Pasadena. Recent group exhibitions include Fredrick R. Weisman Museum of Art, Malibu; Zero, Milan; Lisson Gallery, London; Ratio Three, San Francisco; Office Baroque, Brussels, and Swiss Institute, New York. Rey lives and works in Los Angeles.
