BRIAN BRESS
You Can't Sleep on a Door
8 November 2014 - 3 January 2015

The gallery will be closed November 27-29 for Thanksgiving and December 24-27, December 31 and January 1 in observance of the winter holidays.

Cherry and Martin is pleased to announce an exhibition of new, compelling objects by Brian Bress. Comprised of paintings and sculptures, Bress's latest body of work, like the exhibition's title, combines quotidian imagery in absurd and tragicomic ways. This will be Bress's third solo exhibition at the gallery.

The work in You Can't Sleep on a Door explores tropes and traditions of abstraction and representational painting across multiple mediums with costumes and props that span a range of genres. Paintings and sculptures with time based components show performers that are obscured by full-body suits and masks that often act as camouflage within their inhabited space. Through the creative processes of drawing, sculpting, etching, cutting and assembling the performers acknowledge not only the traditional fourth wall but amplify the existence of the very object that contains their actions. And as the creative process unfolds and reveals, tension is wound and unwound through the endless act of making and erasing.

Brian Bress's upcoming solo exhibitions include the Utah Museum of Fine Arts (Salt Lake City, UT, 2015) and the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver (Denver, CO, 2016). Bress has recently had solo exhibitions and projects at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (Los Angeles, CA); Museo d'arte contemporanea (MACRO) (Rome, Italy); Santa Barbara Museum of Art (Santa Barbara, CA); and New Museum (New York, NY). Brian Bress lives and works in Los Angeles, CA.
