The exhibition on Lyonel Feininger (1871-1956) organized by the Harvard Art Museums is an exception among the many other shows devoted to the artist. The selection of works by the American artist includes some 80 of the most exquisite drawings and watercolours from the William S. Lieberman Bequest taken from the extensive holdings of works in the Busch-Reisinger Museum in Harvard. The outstanding works, some of which will be unknown to the general public, provide a comprehensive overview of Lyonel Feininger's graphic output. A second, separate section in the exhibition is devoted to one of the artist's creative fields that is not so well-known to date: his photography. From the holdings in the Houghton Library at Harvard University, supplemented by loans from the Bauhaus-Archiv in Berlin and the Stiftung Moritzburg in Halle, among others, a representative selection of some 80 photographs taken between 1928-39 will be shown that let us discover Lyonel Feininger as a modernist photographer with high artistic demands and of high ranking.

This exhibition was organized by the Harvard Art Museums/Busch-Reisinger Museum Cambridge, Massachusetts in cooperation with the Kupferstichkabinett Berlin, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin and the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung München.

The exhibition, tour, and catalogue were funded in part through the generosity of the Friends of the Busch-Reisinger Museum, the Terra Foundation for American Art, and The Dedalus Foundation, Inc.
