The artist Max Weiler (1910-2001) is one of the most important and prolific European graphic artists of his generation. For the first time this exhibition will also show how the artist - who is firmly anchored in the public's mind as a great painter - is an equally important graphic artist, an artist who, since the outset at the end of the 1920s, opened up an additional field of autonomous creative self-exploration with his works on paper, and who -unerringly and obsessively - created an oeuvre of outstanding importance right up until his death. Despite international exhibitions, Weiler's work has however not received the attention of a larger public outside Austria that it deserves. This exhibition will show a representative selecton of works on paper presented in acomprehensive retrospective in the Albertina in Vienna in summer 2011. A comprehensive catalogue with several essays by well-known authors will be published by Hatje Cantz (c. 408 pages, 440 colour illustrations).
