MIKE KELLEY AND ROSEMARIE TROCKEL
Works from The Michael and Eleonore Stoffel Foundation
17 October, 2011 - 5 February, 2012
The conceptual approach and working practices in creating art, variously adopted by Rosemarie Trockel and Mike Kelley-by a woman and by a man-by a German and by an American-actually bear several similarities when looked at more closely. The wall pieces, sculptures and installations by the two artists, born two years apart, in 1952 and 1954, form self-contained yet diverse worlds of their own. They reveal themselves to the viewer in a process of synchronized compaction. Both artists explore, in their own unmistakable way, systems of governance: the family, state and religion. Their works sensually expose social conventions as dubious components in a world of hierarchies.
