Olaf Nicolai (*1962) is one of the most versatile contemporary German artists. In his examination of relationships between art, nature and music, bodies, time and space, the most diverse inter-disciplinary works have been created since 1997, often integrating historical or social aspects of where the exhibition is held. The artist's most recent project for the sweeping central staircase in the Pinakothek der Moderne is a sound installation, at the centre of which is the human voice - with both its sensual power of expression as well as its political dimension. Songs by international contemporary composers, written during the twelve months in 2011 and dealing with political issues, will merge to form a sung 'chronicle of the year' which can then be heard live on twelve Sundays in the year.
