Halong Kellong's New Product Launch Party -- Shi Jinsong solo exhibition

16 Dec 2006 - 03 Feb 2007

After the debut of Shi Jinsong's Halong-Kellong sculptural installation at the Shanghai Biennale we are proud to present this outstanding installation to the Beijing public.

This exhibition takes off with a real Halong Kellong's Product Launch Party including fre e rides with the Halong Kellongs, a music band performance and much more.

The sculptural installation Halong-Kellong is the imagined self-projection of modern life from a Chinese peasant's perspective. This is a work of analytical realism, using the processes of design, production, participation and performance to present a microcosm of contemporary China . Halong-Kellong is comprised of a three hand truck imprinted with a Harley-Davidson style logo. Each work forms a space for entertainment formed by melding the forms of the tractor and the shipping container, and including a Karaoke room, a Western-style buffet and a movie screening facility. The artist combined these forms into an entirely new creation (vaguely reminiscent of a Chinese dragon). Constructed from stainless steel and electroplated metal, it projects a cool and fashionable air of futurism, bigger and stranger than any Harley. Although the diesel engines that drive it are powerful, they may not be fast. Its safety measures have not been tested, pending adjustment.

The hand truck is the most commonly seen piece of equipment in China 's rural villages. Cheap, portable, high-horsepower and multi-functional, it can accomplish any agricultural task, and was once a symbol of China 's agricultural modernization. The Harley-Davidson is colloquially called a “prince' s chariot,” often ridden by the most badass characters in American movies. Brave, fierce, high-displacement, and high-speed, the Harley Knight is the collective fantasy of a new generation of youth.

Halong-Kellong has undergone the artist's re-design to become ever more fashionable, cool and modern. It has become an art form integrating dining, entertainment, physical exercise and work.

Like the complex form of the work itself, the name Halong-Kellong also makes a number of allusions. “Ha” begins the Chinese transcription of the English world “hello,” and means to like, worship or follow blindly. Kellong is a transliteration of the English word clone, meaning to copy, counterfeit or mark. The Chinese title could be roughly interpreted as meaning “to like copies.” The English title, “Halong-Kellong” is a rendering in Chinese Pinyin Romanization of the words “Hello-Clone,” and also hints at Hubei 's provincial dialect.

Just like Harley Davidson has their marketing products, Halong Kelong will start off with a 'clone' movement, which will develop his own product series. On this Halong kelong product launch party the Halong Kelong product series will be launched for the first time in order to satisfy the overall demands of the Halong Kelong fans.
