“People get angry at environmentalists because they think they’ re slowing down the economy and creating restrictions and a lot of these people are Christian. A lot of these people are very devout Christians and that’ s such a confusing thing to me—that if you believed that God gave you the Earth, that God created the Earth for you, why would you not have to look after it? ... Why would you not think that when he came back he wouldn’ t go, ‘ What the fuck did you do? I GAVE THIS TO YOU MOTHERFUCKERS! ARE YOU CRAZY? THE POLAR BEARS ARE BROWN! WHAT DID YOU DO TO THE POLAR BEARS? Did you shit all over every polar bear?’”—Louis C.K.
Bodily and ecological damage happens before our eyes, and yet we can remain oblivious of this fact. The surface, of skin or landscape, can be tranquil and evince normalcy, while all the while be in tumult at a more fundamental level. Maybe this situation is necessitated by our need for superficiality in routine life, or maybe our base narcissistic impulses are activated by problematic circumstances that take away from our sense of security.
Catherine Biocca (1984, IT) recently finished her second year at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam after graduating in 2013 from the Düsseldorf Academy. Recent solo shows include: On Display, Basis, Frankfurt, and MEETING4D, Silberkuppe, Berlin (both in 2015). In the same year Biocca received the STRABAG Art Award, and her work was included in several group shows, including Ginko Art Space, Beijing, the 3rd Ural Industrial Biennial of Contemporary Art, Yekaterinburg, and the New Media Festival, Miami. Biocca has also presented a solo project for the BILLBOARD SERIES at 019, Ghent (curated by Thomas J. Caron), and will have her first solo show at Jeanine Hofland, Amsterdam in 2016.
Charlotte Herzig (1983, CH) has a BFA from the University of Art and Design in Lausanne (ECAL) and an MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. Recent exhibitions include Il frutto dentro di me, a two-person show with Andreas Hochuli at Kunsthaus Langenthal, Switzerland (2015); Association New, a group show at SALTS, Basel, and Friday, a group show curated by Samuel Leuenberger and Elise Lammer, at Autocenter, Berlin (both 2014). She also participated in Harum Scarum, a group show curated by Guillaume Pilet, Blancpain Art Contemporain, Geneva (2013); Plate Mappe, group show, Curtat Tunnel, Lausanne (2012); Nu Body, group show, Eleanor Harwood Gallery, San Francisco (2012).
