ANDREW PALMER
Disjunction of Men
16 May - 3 August 2013

Galerie Rüdiger Schöttle is pleased to announce the forthcoming exhibition Disjunction of Men by the British artist Andrew Palmer. The exhibition presents new paintings in both two and three dimensional form, configured by hand woven, split stick fences, that divide and accentuate the rectilinear nature of the gallery space. Like his work, Andrew Palmer's title Disjunction of Men extends the open yet directed realm of possible interpretation. Defying any direct references, the paintings are nevertheless suggestive of connections that are both historical and immediate. Through Palmer's work, we are confronted with a world that is beyond both the visible and the definable. Intuition and the slow passage of time play important roles in a process that layers, accumulates, removes and condenses materials. Over extended periods, Palmer applies oil, acrylic gesso paint, and varnish to various supports of canvas, solid wood panel, and found stone. Layering and excavating the surface, he creates bas-reliefs that hide and reveal still more complex underlying structures dominated by pastel and earth shades. As the title Disjunction of Men suggests, Palmer's main concern lies in the perception of boundaries, overlaps, separation and union, which he reflects upon through his sophisticated technique. Contradicting both pictorial space and sensory perception, foregrounds and backgrounds flip, negative and positive form merge, while actual and illusionary dimensions are dissolved. The resulting works evoke associations with organic structures, digital systems, or ancient walls in what seems to be a conflation of the past and the future. Disjunction of Men is a complex composition of surface and space created through the interplay of objects and materials, of colour, form, and texture. In an ever shifting exchange of the solid and the void, and of light and shade, Palmer builds an environment of shifting dimensions. Intangible and in a constant state of flux, the exhibition addresses the enigmatic theme of subjectivity itself. Andrew Palmer was born in Salisbury, UK, in 1979. He studied Fine Art at Falmouth College of Art from 1998 until 2001, and completed his MFA at the Slade School of Fine Art, London, in 2005. This is his third exhibition at the Rüdiger Schöttle Gallery.
