2016 D.C. PALEOLITOA
02 November – 29 January 2017

Creativity is the essential feature of human nature. It is the force that has allowed adaptation to the geographical medium and the engine that has served to advance against adversities, converting them into opportunities.

During its evolution, starting from the most everyday experiences, one of the properties exclusive to the human being is the symbolic capacity to create art. In this sense, we are increasingly encountering more antique artistic expressions. Humans have expressed their experiences, dreams and fears by painting or engraving on their bodies, belongings and cave walls.

This Palaeolithic art is also present in the caves in Bizkaia. For the last few years the collaboration and joint work of institutes, archaeologists and speleologists has contributed to the recovery and study of an extensive group of caves with prehistoric art. Caves recently added to the classical list of Ventalaperra (Karrantza), Santimamiñe (Kortezubi) and Arenaza (Galdames) include those of El Rincón (Karrantza), Askondo (Mañaria), Atxurra (Berritua), Lumentxa, Armintxe (Lekeitio) and Morgota (Kortezubi), to mention the most important ones. This exhibition shows the work undertaken and its results. Supported by new technologies, it experiments with creativity by relating Palaeolithic art on 21st century supports with the most recent creations presented on traditional bases. A wink from the past to contemporaneity.

The main objective is to generate emotions in visitors while spreading the knowledge gained in this scientific journey. For this, there are various assemblages that are counter-posed in historic time throughout the exhibition. An invitation to reflection and thought. The presentation at the hall shows the activities and protagonists working on the discovery, study, protection, publication and management of Palaeolithic art in Bizkaia, describing their experiences and work. Definitely, they open the most intimate door of their knowledge to us.

Let’s start our journey.
Then, through a total immersion system, we enter an area dedicated to a virtual visit to three caves, Ventalaperra, Santimamiñe and Arenaza. The idea is to generate a unique sensation that allows visitors to enjoy the most ancient artistic expressions of Bizkaia intimately and individually, offering an exclusive journey in a unique ambit – the creative spaces of the Palaeolithic era.

Continuing on our journey we reach the artistic explosion – the meeting of Palaeolithic art and the 21st century. From the hands of various artists, we see how Palaeolithic, contemporary and digital art meld in a unique space in which the differences between them are diluted, submerging visitors in an unusual and innovative emotional atmosphere. We are accompanied in the exhibition by pictures by Miquel Barceló, Mimmo Paladino and Karel Appel as well as by video creations generated exclusively for this exhibition by Paco Gramaje, Txuspo Poyo and Alba Corral.

Following this experience we reach the Workshop, where the use of touchscreens allows visitors to get to know part of the abundant material prepared for the documentation of new caves and their prehistoric art in 2-D and 3-D formats.

A final video, which ends and completes our journey, shows the process of preparing the virtual replicas of the new caves shown and gives the credits for the 2016 d.C. PALEOLITOA exhibition.

We hope that this immersion also helps us to recognise the creative capacity of our ancestors, allowing us to value their work as a unique treasure to be cared for and thus transmitted to future generations without forgetting the essence: art independent of its time.
