Spoiler
24 April - 27 May 2012

Alberto Albor (Burgos 1977) presents the exhibition Spoiler with the works produced during the investigation period enjoyed thanks to the Art Creation Grant of the Regional Council of Bizkaia 2010.

The wall of the studio is rarely empty. Its residues, the adhesive tape used, photographic references, abused fragments of reality that slowly come apart among the lost brushstrokes, in the dripping of the paint.

If a smart detective were to come to this wall without knowing a word about the painter, at a glance he would come across sufficient material with which to reconstruct his most private and concealed nature. The tracks of his mind, carefully ordered, object by object, interwoven in a contemporary hieroglyphic still life, leaving us clues about his time, our time.

As if in a mirror in which only he can be reflected, and with a particular sense of humour, Albor has encrypted references in these picture that are important in his process of accumulating an idea about the world. What happens is that in that mirror, on the wall that we assume to be defensive, we can easily recognise ourselves, although it be in a sideways glance. The shelves house symbols from popular culture that are common to a substantial section of our generation, and which will doubtless make up part of the crucible of cultural production that marks the point we’ve reached in this start to the century.

In this series of works, among digital counters, money that multiplies in mirrors, the cabin at Walden Pond transformed into a toy, a Ballardian natural scene of plastic, detonation devices, impossible light bulbs, cards from past exhibitions, out of date maps and neon-lit signs, there is a packaged box with the word “Spoiler”. This Anglicism is used to express something that ought not to be known, which has been inopportunely or prematurely disclosed. Somehow, in the whole assembly we are seeing, there is an intention to drag the spectator towards a place of artifice, where this collection of references forms an alliance to construct narratives that contain an element of halftruth, a plot to defeat an invisible enemy. Through a protective spell, in their unión they keep secrets that they let us peek at as privileged spectators, in the certainty that there is no way that they will reveal their true enigma.

Alberto Albor (Burgos 1977) lives and works in Bilbao. He graduated in Fine Arts from the Faculty in the Basque Country, where he recently obtained his degree in art research and creation. In 2004 he attended a workshop run by Juan Uslé at the Marcelino Botín Foundation. Two years later he was awarded the Juan de Otaola Pérez de Saracho Scholarship for Artistic Creation, as a result of which he produced the show Deliverance in 2007 at the Torre de Ariz in Basauri.

In 2008 he was a scholar resident at the Fundación Bilbao Arte, where he showed his work a year later in an individual exhibition, El miedo acaba con el sueño, also participating in the collective show Bilbao Arte New Yorken at the Gabarron Foundation-Carriage House Center for the Arts in New York.

He has been selected in several competitions including the L’oreal and the Uned Bizkaia contest in which he received an award, as he did in the 2nd Young Artists Competition, organised by Caja Burgos in 2007, receiving a Mention of Honour. Currently he continues to develop his new ongoing pictorial project under the title of Spoiler.
