IÑAKI IMAZ
"Lo Mío"

February 08th - April 15th, 2007

Curator: Leire Vergara

The output of Basque artist Iñaki Imaz constitutes a clear example of how contemporary pictorial practice 'like other mediums such as photography, video or other hybrid modes of production' establishes strong links with the context from which the work is produced. The way Imaz's painting sets you thinking goes further than an automatic response to a set of physical conditions that must supposedly be adapted to, for instead, the behaviour it develops is in reverse. It consists of the construction of a specific situation from a simple structural change, or from a particular interruption, by which he is provided with an excuse that permits him to construct an open experience or frees his painting from any pre-established limitations. So the artist generally sets up norms or small rules that are applied, above all, during the production process. This is the case with previous work such as Amor y pedagogía / Love and pedagogy (Arteleku, 1990-2002), where he presented an installation that gets its initial drive from the re-exhibiting of two pictures created twelve years previously and that acted as a catalyst for a new installation.

Within the Gabinete Abstracto / Abstract Cabinet, under the title Lo Mío / Mine, Imaz presents a new collection of works that simultaneously open up a variety of new lines of interpretation and are grouped together in the exhibition space in line with a new rule that has come into play, this time in the shape of obstacles, imposing their familiar presence upon one another. The installation is constructed from a number of personal items belonging to the artist which, far from providing information about him, fill us with a sense of unease. These objects, with a cocky wink, are emphatically suggestive of personal experiences and create a structure from which various conceptual systems unfold, grouped under the titles cerdo-jabalí / pig-wild boar and El que manda aquí / The person in charge here.

Likewise, this series mentally links up two parallel contexts. On the one hand, the Abstract Cabinet in the sala rekalde and, on the other, the educational world of the University of the Basque Country's Fine Arts Faculty. Iñaki Imaz has worked as a teacher in the Faculty's Painting Department for the last fifteen years and, in connection with this exhibition, will carry out a series of parallel activities that will take place in a workshop-seminar format open to participation from young artists.
