Forstgottheiten / Deities Of The Forest
8 October - 3 December, 2011

Schau Ort is proud to announce "Forstgottheiten / Deities Of The Forest", our first solo-exhibition with German artist Bettina Carl.

Saturday, November 5th, 5 pm:
Presentation of Bettina Carl's new catalogue "Forstgottheiten / Deities Of The Forest". Introduction and talk with Irene Müller, author and art scholar. We look forward to welcoming you with a Swiss Apéro.
Bettina Carl's principal medium is drawing, and she mainly works in thematic groups. Schau Ort will present her most recent series entitled Forstgottheiten / Deities Of The Forest, a group of drawings about "twigs, moss, foliage, desire, chiaroscuro and a thicket of traditional notions", as Bettina Carl describes it. The exhibition will comprise paper formats ranging from small (30 x 40 cm) to large (178 x 150 cm), complemented by some three-dimensional works. In her sophisticated compositions, Bettina Carl leaves most of the semantics to the viewer. So it is largely a question of our association and imagination where to discern some mythical entities looming in the scrub, intertwined with trees, branches, and leaves. Bettina Carl’s Forstgottheiten are reminiscent of the Romanticists, a time when the “German fondness for woods increasingly acquired an ideological veneer”, as the artist explains; in her drawings, however, these references appear in a playfully rendered way. Bettina Carl's style blends the boundary between the mediums of drawing and painting. Moreover, in her works she trespasses the line between figuration and abstraction, thus asserting a unique position in the field of contemporary painting.
