MICHIEL CEULERS
It's Not Easy Being Green
5 June - 6 July 2013
We are very happy to announce the second solo-exhibition of Michiel Ceulers at SCHAU ORT titled "It's not easy being green". On opening day, June 1st, please join us and the artist for a BBQ in front of the gallery from 5 - 9 pm. We also participate at the annual Pre-Art Basel Open House Weekend: Zurich galleries open on Saturday, 8 June and Sunday, 9 June from 11 am to 5 pm.
Michiel Ceulers (born 1986 in Belgium) concentrates on the essentials of painting: acrylic, oil or spray-paint on a canvas or wooden panel. As the title of the exhibition suggests, the paintings in this show are dedicated to the color green. This title derives from the same-named song by Kermit the Frog (click to watch). To name an exhibition after a song is something Michiel Ceulers has done before. This time, instead of utilizing an "intellectual" piece of music, Ceulers falls back on his method of employing low-brow - or in his words "stupid" - imagery as inspiration for his works. Kermit the Frog, a children's television figure, is devoid of any political or social implication - it is just good fun. The photo used for this invitation - Michiel Ceulers with a Kermit puppet in a well known pose from a Jeff Koons sculpture - demonstrates another essential factor of the artist's approach to his art (and others): a good dose of tongue-in-cheek humor.
