Vienna calling: comparative contemporary art

Since 1998, Elisabeth Penker’s sculptures and audio films have been anchored in the developing fields of Comparative Art and Sound Art. Using linguistic morphologies (including Contact Languages), Penker explores links to a preference of musical and visual grammars. The title of her exhibition "Vienna Calling: Comparative Contemporary Art" makes reference to the linguistic morphology of various institutions and (fine) arts museums in Vienna.
Penker’s sculptures compare visual/linguistic and musical grammars (e.g. Modern Art and First Nations Art) and use the results as a structural point of view for each composition - like the First Nations Pavilion at Kunsthaus Graz by Penker produced in 2006 in collaboration with Elmgreen & Dragset. Likewise her collages, photographs, diagrams, and drawings expand upon her sculptural ideas about 3 and 4 dimensional connections. Elisabeth Penker worked in postproduction for films studios in London and Chicago and since 2000 she developed a series of handmade musical instruments (untitled instrument, sonic structures) that utilize Jack Foley’s recording method for film. Stereo Audio excerpts of her multi-channel compositions were broadcast on radio stations (e.g. Resonance 104.4 fm (London) and an article on Sound Art by Penker was published in the Resonance Magazine Supplement. Together with members of Fo/Go Lab, Penker co-organised The Migrating Museum conference at the Jan Van Eyck Academy in Maastricht and at Documenta 12 a videos was exhibited as an integrated part of Ricardo Basbaum's contribution.
Elisabeth Penker, born in Reisseck (Kolbnitz/Penk), Austria in 1974, studied at the National Academy of Fine Arts (Oslo), University of Vienna, Academy of Fine Arts (Sculpture and Institute of Contemporary Art), University of Applied Arts Vienna; Lectures and Research: Univ. Assistant/ Academy of Fine Arts, Visiting Artist at the Art Center Pasadena, Researcher at the Jan van Eyck Academy, Maastricht and Austrian Academy of Sciences, lives and works in Vienna and Rome. 2000 State Scholarship for Fine Arts from the bm:ukk. 2009 Theodor Körner Prize for scientific work.
