The Serpentine Gallery has pioneered the presentation of contemporary architecture since 2000 with its annual architecture commission, the Serpentine Gallery Pavilion. The world’s first and most ambitious project of its kind, the Pavilion continues to receive critical acclaim and record attendance figures, with last year’s Pavilion, designed by Frank Gehry, the fourth most visited attraction in London during 2008. Expanding on the great success of this project, the Gallery develops its programming into a new sphere this winter with its first exhibition devoted to design, Design Real.
Design Real is both a groundbreaking presentation of contemporary design and a unique insight into the mind of its curator, German designer Konstantin Grcic, one of the most influential figures in 21st-century design. Grcic has selected objects currently in serial, industrial production that push boundaries in form and function. The projects, all conceived in the last decade, range from items for everyday use, such as furniture and household products, to objects at the cutting-edge of industry and scientific development. The exhibition features an interactive space specially designed by Grcic
where visitors can investigate how the designs interface with society.
Konstantin Grcic, born in Munich in 1965, founded Konstantin Grcic Industrial Design (KGID) in 1991. KGID specialises in various fields of design ranging from industrial products to exhibition design.
Grcic’s projects have received international design awards and form part of the permanent collections of institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the Musée National d’Art Moderne, Paris.
