Rirkrit Tiravanija
05 Jul - 21 Aug 2005
Rirkrit Tiravanija, one of the most influential artists to have emerged in the early 1990s, focuses on breaking down the divisions between art and life. Best known for installations that encourage the direct participation of museum and gallery visitors, he has produced memorable works that invite his audiences to sample a meal, have a drink and engage in other social activities.
Tiravanija has a long-standing interest in modern architecture, and he has reconstructed existing spaces such as Philip Johnson’s Glass House and Austrian-born architect Rudolf Schindler’s house in Los Angeles.
His first solo exhibition in London will feature a broadcasting studio within the Gallery from which a serialised radio programme will be transmitted daily on Resonance 104.4fm, with members of the public cast as characters. It will be on air live from Monday to Saturday at 4.30pm, with a recorded omnibus presentation weekly on Sundays at 11am. Tiravanija will also create two full-scale, fully functioning replicas of his New York apartment, each furnished with a kitchen, bathroom, reception room and bedroom for visitors to use.
Born in 1961, Tiravanija currently divides his time between New York, Chiang Mai and Berlin. His recent work includes co-founding The Land, 1998 – present, an environmental reclamation project near Chiang Mai that brings together art, architecture and agriculture. The artist was awarded the HUGO BOSS PRIZE in 2004, accompanied by an exhibition at the Solomon R Guggenheim Museum in New York. His work has been featured in major solo exhibitions at the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam in 2004, and at the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris in 2005.
