FELIX SCHRAMM
25th January - 29th March 2008
Felix Schramm (* 1970 in Hamburg, lives and works in Düsseldorf, Germany) is a sculptor and installation artist. His sculptures and site-specific installations made from building materials like drywall, paint, steel frames and wood broach the issue of spatial perception as well as the relationship between sculpture and space. Schramm ́s installations challenge the viewers to discern where the artwork ends and the gallery’s architecture begins. His twisted, splintered fragments of structural forms — walls, ceilings, floors — burst from the building's framework at dramatic angles as if they were about to disrupt the exhibition space, producing large-scale works that seem at once threatening and fragile. The sculpture seems to establish a new architectural order and creates a spatial impression that contrasts the gallery ́s white cube with an aesthetics of ruinous structures and chaotic constel-lations. Tilted and toppled surfaces interfere with the central perspective by undermining the familiar horizontal and vertical viewshafts, while also tempting with a truly pictorial colouring, and thus give us a completely new experience of space and physical tension. The photo collages develop as an independent group of works in conjunction with the installation pieces. Photos of the installations are fragmented, cut and shredded to be recomposed in the collage forming a new order and design. Being another deconstruction of the installation piece the collages form an important extension of Schramm ́s sculptural work. After a large presentation in Beirut and the intervention at Frieze art fair 2007 we are proud to present the first solo exhibition of Felix Schramm in our Hamburg gallery. On show will be a new installation piece together with new sculptures and photo collages. We are glad to invite you and your friends to the opening on Thursday, January 24th, 7 to 9 pm. The artist will attend the opening.
