AMERICAN ICONS
MASTERWORKS FROM SFMOMA AND THE FISHER COLLECTION
11 July - 18 October 2015
American Icons: Masterworks from SFMOMA and the Fisher Collection highlights 14 artists collected in depth by SFMOMA and Doris and Donald Fisher, founders of Gap Inc. Organized as an anthology of key American painters and sculptors, the exhibition offers a focused view of art-making in the United States between 1940 and the early 2000s with some 50 iconic artworks by Alexander Calder, Chuck Close, Dan Flavin, Ellsworth Kelly, Sol LeWitt, Agnes Martin, and Andy Warhol, among others. The Fishers have built one of the greatest private collections of modern and contemporary art in the world — a museum-quality selection of work by major 20th- and 21st-century artists that complements SFMOMA's holdings and, thanks to a historic partnership, will be shared with the public in the museum's expanded home. Integrating these renowned collections for the first time and showcasing their combined strength, American Icons is curated by Gary Garrels, SFMOMA senior curator of painting and sculpture, and will travel to two venues in France while the museum's building is closed for construction, bringing seminal American works to Europe and providing an intimate preview of what's to come when these two incredible collections come together under one roof in 2016.
