HP ZIMMER
Steckbrief
Works on paper, paintings and sculpture
29 November 2014 - 29 March 2014
Curated by Christine Heidemann
Within the framework of the series ‘Trouvaille’, the Städtische Galerie Wolfsburg is presenting a solo exhibition by HP Zimmer (*1936–92) with paintings, works on paper and sculptures from the period between the early nineteen-seventies and the end of the eighties. In contrast to his paintings, which are represented in many large museum collections, the sculptures and works on paper have up to now only rarely been exhibited. They illustrate how experimentally the artist dealt with the question of figurative expression in engaging with various artistic positions of the twentieth century and using materials foreign to art. What becomes visible is his interest in artistic experimentation and in the playful, while nonetheless also not omitting threatening and darker subjects. Zimmer, as one of the co-founders of the group SPUR, which occupies an important position in the history of (western) European art of the second half of the twentieth century, was an attentive observer and commentator on his time. This can be recognised not only based on his multi-faceted oeuvre, but also in extensive journal entries and other texts on day-to-day political events and cultural-historical phenomena.
HP Zimmer lived in Braunschweig and was a professor there at the Hochschule der Bildenden Künste from 1982 until his early death in 1992.
The exhibition is curated by Christine Heidemann (independent curator, Berlin) and in cooperation with the SPUR Archiv, Berlin.
With the generous support of the Lüneburgischen Landschaftsverband and the association jugend in der galerie e.V.
