WOLFGANG ELLENRIEDER
HYBRID
9 April - 4 August 2013
The Städtische Galerie Wolfsburg is presenting the exhibition “HYBRID” with works by Wolfgang Ellenrieder in cooperation with the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Braunschweig. Recent works by the artist will be presented at both locations – in Wolfsburg as well as in Braunschweig – in a unique dialogue between the historical location of Schloss Wolfsburg and the white-cube architecture of the Galerie der Hochschule in Braunschweig. In his large-format new images, Wolfgang Ellenrieder addresses the question of the “duplication of the world” as a result of the rapid development of digital media and thus calls into question both our traditional patterns of perceiving the real and the fake, truth and illusion, as well as our subjective notions of a real world of things. In both the Städtische Galerie Wolfsburg and the Galerie der HBK Braunschweig, space and surface structures are examined and reflected through the use of various artistic as well as reproduction techniques.
The focus of the presentation in the Städtische Galerie Wolfsburg is on “spatial structures”. In this, the character of the historical location in comparison to the modern architecture of the Hochschule forms a particular arc of tension and promises an interesting show of works by the Munich-based artist. In Schloss Wolfsburg, Wolfgang Ellenrieder thus realises works that reflect the distinctive character of the historical location as a result of the fact that he addresses both the interior architectonic structure as well as the surface structures of the former residential rooms of the counts. The exposed ceiling frescoes as well as the wallpaper structures are transposed in the most diverse of artistic media, including also graphic reproductions. Important reference points in this include the perception of surfaces in comparison to the pictorial space or the finding of form through taking over pre-existing structures.
Since 2010, the artist, who was born in Munich in 1959, has been teaching at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Braunschweig.
