The 7th edition of the Sharjah Biennial consolidated the renewal process of the event, which began two years ago. Hoor Al Qasimi took over the biennial's direction in 2002 to open it up to new art practices and to start up a "new era for contemporary art in the Gulf."

Already the 6th Sharjah Biennial was characterized by this intention, and by an exciting atmosphere of a new beginning. While at that time a lot of things still had to be improvised, this year's edition is much more concentrated and professional in its organization, and undoubtedly stands up to the comparison with the established highlights of the international art scene.

The theme of the 7th Sharjah Biennial, conceived by Jack Persekian together with the two co-curators and organizers, revolves around the issue of "Belonging". The selected and specially commissioned artworks refer to "persistent questions of belonging and unbelonging in a context of change," addressing the fast developments in the Emirates, and reflecting about the "increasingly vaporous landscapes of our homes, habitats, societies and nations."

In our Photo Tour we would like to provide impressions of the atmosphere, the exhibition spaces, and some artworks of the 7th Sharjah Biennial. According to the focus of our project "Universes in Universe - Worlds of Art", we concentrate above all on the participants from Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Whoever wants to know more will find presentations of all artists on the extensive website of the Sharjah Biennial.
