Sikkema Jenkins & Co. is pleased to announce an exhibition of new works by Arturo Herrera on view from October 17 to November 15, 2008.
Arturo Herrera’s work taps into the viewer’s subconscious, often taking found imagery that is then fragmented, abstracted or otherwise obscured. What remains evokes a sense of familiarity – something recognized or remembered – but at the same time the work remains open-ended.
The exhibition features a new series of wool felts that hang from the wall in tangled forms. Herrera has long worked with felt but unlike his earlier works that lay flat against the wall, these fall away from the wall and spill onto the floor adding greater dimensionality and abstraction.
Fragmentation and re-composition are at the core of the aluminum sculptures. For this series of works, Herrera used shaped commercial cake molds that he then flattened and folded - the end result displayed in an individual glass vitrine. These sculptures probe the potential of abstract forms through chance of their production.
Arturo Herrera’s work has been exhibited throughout the United States and Europe in numerous group and solo exhibitions. He has had recent solo exhibitions at The Aldrich Museum in Ridgefield, CT, Ikon Gallery in Birmingham, U.K., and Kettle’s Yard in Cambridge, U.K., and will be taking part in the Prospect.1 biennial in New Orleans beginning on November 1st. Herrera was born in Caracas, Venezuela. He lives and works in New York City and Berlin.
