Sikkema Jenkins & Co. is please to announce an exhibition of new works by Burt Barr, on view from June 12 through July 25, 2008.
For this exhibition Burt Barr returns to his guiding premise, "that black & white are the only two colors I'll ever need.” A believer of the single take – no matter its length – Barr's work is the antithesis of most modern day film and video. All works were shot by Barr and mastered by his longtime editor, Steve Hamilton.
The videos are all projected directly on the wall and looped for continual viewing. Using bare necessities to convey movement they hang much as paintings or, more appropriately, black and white photographs.
The exhibition will feature the premier of several works including: Gun (2007), Donkey & Lightning (2008), Frog (2008), and Jodi (2008) - a new version of a work originally conceived as a set for The Liz Gerring Dance Company and presented at Danspace in December 2006.
Burt Barr has exhibited extensively both nationally and internationally. He has had solo exhibitions at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York City; Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid; Platform Garanti Contemporary Art Center, Istanbul; and, most recently, PS1, Long Island City, in 2006/07. Other installations have taken place at The Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven, CT; ZKM Center for Art and Media, Karlsruhe, Germany; The Museum of Fine Arts Houston; Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, Rotterdam; the Philadelphia Museum of Art; and the USF Contemporary Art Museum, Tampa, FL.
Barr is the recipient of numerous awards, including grants from the National Edowment for the Arts, the New York State Council on the Arts, The American Film Institute, The Andrea Frank Foundation, The John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, The Foundation for Contemporary Art, and The Massachusetts Council on the Arts & Humanities. In Summer 2008 he will be a visiting artist at the Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture.
Since 2000 Barr has made several print-editions based on his video work at Graphicstudio in Tampa, FL. Burt Barr lives and works in New York City.
