AMALIA PICA
Microphones (2010), Red Carpet (2010)
13 May - 23 June, 2011

SKOR is proud to present an installation by Amalia Pica (Argentina, 1978) in De Inkijk. The installation consists of two artworks: Microphones (2010) and Red Carpet (2010). With these works Pica continues her investigation of the performative dimension of civic participation through exhibiting a red carpet that leads to what resembles groups of microphones, made out of found materials such as tapes and plastic bottles. Situated in the 'shop front' of De Inkijk, in a publicly visible location on the Stadhouderskade, the installation encourages viewers to rethink the symbolic language of politics, communication and publicness.
Pica's body of work circles around themes associated with, or research into, what could be described as the norms and behaviours of social interaction in society, guided by myths and rituals, communal obsessions and desires. Her work questions established communication systems, using the individual voices in society and the difficulty of expressing oneself in public as a motive.
As other works by Pica, the installation presented in De Inkijk creates the illusion of active public interaction in a playful and critical manner. We do not know if the microphones are an invitation for a public speech and what the significance of such a speech might be, especially as none of the microphones are amplified. The project questions the role of the listener in such a non-event and challenges the relationships between means of communication, gestures and political activity. It suggests a seemingly empty public moment, which forces the viewer to rethink public opinion in terms of both form (as opposed to content) and concept.
