Love is like Oxygen
LIEFDE IN DE STAD

The latest edition of Liefde in de Stad will present: a contemporary tile tableau by artist Arno Coenen in Oud-West; De Burenwinkel (neighbors shop) by Martijn Engelbregt in collaboration with young designers from the Sandberg Institute; and Love is like Oxygen, a group exhibition that will open in W139. Finally, on 23 September, Paradiso will host the presentation of the Amsterdamse Index voor de Liefdevolle Omgang (Amsterdam’s index for loving human contact), an exploration of the different forms of human contact that are found in urban culture and how these can be positively influenced. In other words: How many people in Amsterdam are actually living in a loving way?

First week of September: Love is like Oxygen

The exhibition Love is like Oxygen, which is taking place in W139, was put together for Liefde in de Stad by Gijs Frieling (W139) and Theo Tegelaers (SKOR). In this exhibition seven artists will use photos, animation and installations to reveal their impressions of the theme of love. The artists are: Saskia Janssen & George Korsmit, Joel Tauber, Jonas Ohlsson, Gil & Moti, Erin Dunn and Ulrike Möntmann.

Second weekend of September: Oud West Thuis Best

Arno Coenen is a Dutch artist who grew up with digital media. Although his work varies from animation films to ceramic works, it consistently exposes socio-critical issues in a humorous manner while uniting different aspects of subcultures and religions. For Liefde in de Stad, Arno collaborated with the kickboxers of Uchi-Komi, a gym located in Oud-West. According to Arno kickboxing is a unique sport, marked by discipline and mutual respect. Arno sought to capture these particular aspects in a mosaic measuring six by three meters and titled Oud West Thuis Best. Throughout the month of September, the work will be on display on the wall located at the intersection of the Nicolaas Beetsstraat and the Kinkerstraat in Oud-West.

Third weekend of September: De Burenwinkel (neighbors shop)

De Burenwinkel is a renovated SRV vehicle packed with products specifically designed for ‘neighbor situations’. The products are not only aimed at neighbors who don’t know each other and don’t know how to approach each other, but also at neighbors who want to celebrate their ‘neighbordom’. They include a retractable watering can that will allow you to water the plants on your downstairs neighbor’s balcony. In collaboration with young designers of the Sandberg Institute, Martijn Engelbregt created De Burenwinkel in order to spread door-to-door and neighborhood-to-neighborhood awareness. At a time when social norms and values seem to be the exclusive property of policy makers, De Burenwinkel is seeking to hand the responsibility back to neighbors themselves.

De Burenwinkel will be opened during the neighborhood festival ‘Proef de Czaar Peter’ on Saturday 15 September at 3:00 pm on the Czaar Peter Straat. Following this the SRV will make a tour of the city.

Fourth weekend of September: Amsterdamse Index voor de Liefdevolle Omgang (Amsterdam’s index for loving human contact)

How does one design a city so that it becomes more loving? This particular Liefde in de Stad project is an exploration of the different forms of human contact that are found in urban culture and how these can be positively influenced. In collaboration with Amsterdam’s Dienst Onderzoek en Statistiek (bureau of research and statistics) and the research bureau, Stadspeil, Liefde in de Stad investigated (coincidental) meetings in the city between people who are basically strangers to each other. To what degree are we open to other people in Amsterdam? The results of a questionnaire that includes responses from a few thousand Amsterdammers will demonstrate under which circumstances we come into contact with each other. When combined with existing statistical information and new sources of data, these responses offer us an opportunity to formulate the necessary conditions for positive meetings. After all, according to Liefde in de Stad, interventions in the public domain should not only be judged in terms of safety, cost or practical usability, but also in terms of their love-inducing potential.

During the presentation of the research findings in Paradiso, a panel of policy makers, artists, architects and designers will discuss the results and provide their personal responses to the question of how one can design a more loving public domain. This Paradiso event is aimed at informing and inspiring anyone who is interested in designing the public domain and/or in the interaction between urban dwellers.
