FAUX JUMEAUX

18.10.2008... 31.01.2010

At the end of 2008 Michel François had received carte blanche from the S.M.A.K. to determine the exhibition programme in two galleries for more than a year. François chose two identical exhibition rooms and named his project "Faux Jumeaux" (false twins). He asked 15 people to each select two works of art which, although very similar with regard to form or material, were created independently. Which similarities or differences between the two works come to light when ‘mirrored’ in the two identical galleries?

The idea to exhibit false twins during more then a year and a half in the S.M.A.K. came from a discussion François witnessed between two museum directors about the striking similarity between two works by Ann Veronica Janssens and Michelangelo Pistoletto, while he knew that Janssen’s’ work had been created quite independently of that of Pistoletto. For that it was obvious to give the first Faux Jumeaux choise to Michel François himself.

The following curators of Faux Jumeaux are Michel François, Loic Vanderstichelen, Daniel McClean, Joël Benzakin, Yves Brochard, François Curlet, Guillaume Désanges, Lea Gauthier, Jean-Paul Jacquet, Laurent Jacob, Rainier Lericolai, Raya Lindberg, Christine Macel, Bernard Basile, Frank Maes, Hans Theys and Philippe Van Cauteren. Thomas Caron and Pierre Muylle coordinate the project.

Faux Jumeaux can be seen as presedent to Michel François’ retrospective exhibition Plans d'évasion, on view since october 2009.
