On 28 January 2017, S.M.A.K. will be opening its Broodthaerskabinet – Projet pour M.B. Marcel Broodthaers’ work is of crucial importance to S.M.A.K. as a mirror for reflection on the significance of museums in general and S.M.A.K. in particular.
As from April 2016, works from the S.M.A.K. collection that were created between 1964 and 1976 will be exhibited as a prelude to the future Broodthaerskabinet. These twelve years not only represent several revolutions in contemporary art, but also the time when Marcel Broodthaers explicitly was active as a visual artist.
By bringing together pieces from the collection created during that period – without showing works by Marcel Broodthaers himself – the context in which his oeuvre took shape is examined.
