FOLDS IN TIME
6 June - 11 October 2015
Folds in time is conceived as one exhibition in two museums. This two-part design relates in a natural way to the oeuvre of Lili Dujourie (Roeselare, 1941), to which the notion of the ‘fragment’ is essential.
Lili Dujourie’s work unfolds out of the gap between painting and sculpture. Motifs from art, literature and music serve as crucial sources for her work. After making debut with steel and colour objects in the late 1960s, Dujourie’s practice shifted into photography and video in the 1970s. As well as exploring the blurring between art disciplines, in these new media she also raised gender- and identity-related issues prevalent at that time. The duality of movement and standstill inherent to film has fed the artist’s three-dimensional work from the 1980s to the present.
Lili Dujourie creates sculptural forms for the passing of time, for presence disappearing into absence. Such materials as paper, velvet, marble, plaster and clay are handled alternately with softness and violence. An interplay of hiding and showing arises out of this search for balance. Dujourie’s artistic attitude forms a consistent critical resistance to any form of cultural dominance, executed as an elegant approach of the fragment.
This exhibition will be on in parallel at both S.M.A.K. (Ghent) and Mu.ZEE (Ostend). The two sections, one inland and one on the coast, cover Dujourie’s work from her debut in the 1960s until the present. The exhibition gets an extra dimension: Lili Dujourie has chosen the MSK in Ghent to exhibit the very first work she made using velvet, 'Maagdendale' from 1982.
