Nothing to Do but Keep Going

Kianja Strobert: Nothing to Do but Keep Going, the artist’s first solo museum exhibition, features a new, site-specific sculptural installation and a selection of recent abstract paintings that emphasize the influence of urban architecture on Strobert’s work. Her sculptures showcase the dynamic use of such materials as pumice, sand, flexible LED wire, concrete, cinderblocks, and gilded chicken bones—which she utilizes to explore architectural form and mark making. The exhibition also features select paintings on cinderblock that create textured, topographical surfaces, as well as a range of works on paper that recall finger painting, with smears in a palette of red, brown, and yellow. Kianja Strobert: Nothing to Do but Keep Going is organized by SMMoA's newly appointed curator-at-large Jeffrey Uslip.

About the artist:
Kianja Strobert was born in 1980 and lives and works in Hudson, New York. She earned a Bachelor’s of Arts degree from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a Master’s of Fine Arts degree from Yale University School of Art. Her work has been shown at The Studio Museum in Harlem, New York, as well as at galleries including Jack Tilton Gallery, and Zach Feuer Gallery, New York; and Vox Populi Gallery, Philadelphia.
About the curator:
Jeffrey Uslip (b. 1977) is a New York-based independent curator, who has organized exhibitions for PS1/MOMA, New York, Artists Space, New York, Columbia University’s Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, California State University, Los Angeles, and LAXART, Los Angeles. He is an online contributor to Art Forum, has lectured at the Whitney Museum of American Art, and is currently a doctoral candidate at The Institute of Fine Arts, New York University.
