ROBERT LONGO
Mysterious Heart
11 January - February 24, 2011

From January 11th, Soledad Lorenzo’s Gallery hosts the third exhibition of the American artist, Robert Longo. Among the 27 pieces that make up Mysterious Heart, are his final small and large scale drawings, 9 works in colour and an installation.
Mysterious Heart begins with a series of three large pieces (243.75 x 178 cm) showing female faces with Burkas. These drawings suggest at the women’s gaze and at the same time the rest of their faces are hidden by the garment. The tittles of these works contain the names of the portrayed women. “Untitled (Barbara in a Burka)”,” ··· Monica ···” y “···Hanane ···”).
The exhibition continues with a series consisting of three pieces that offer an architectural perspective of the interior of a religious space. The drawings include a gothic cathedral, a mosque and a synagogue. “Confronted” or displayed in the same space, these works refer to the socio cultural connotations of these spaces, and highlight both the differences and similarities of the three cultures and religions.
Mysterious Heart ends with a series of ten small size drawings dealing with different subjects. Some of these works, like “Study of a Tiger in a Cage” and “the Burka Women” are studies of his large scale pieces.
Drawing for Robert Longo, is an experience that comes close to photography. For him, the use of charcoal is a process similar to photographic development. In his own words: “when drawing from photographs, we are claiming the images that belong to us.”
He has recently exhibited in Kunsthalle Weishaupt, Germany; Musée d'Art Moderne et d'Art Contemporain in Lisbon, and “Surrendering the Absolutes,” in Metro Pictures, New York.

His work has been shown in many galleries including: the Guggenheim Museum and MOMA in New York, the Saatchi Collection in London and the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris.
