GARY ROUGH
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, etc. ...
2 September - 7 October, 2011
Sorcha Dallas is pleased to announce the third solo show at the gallery by Gary Rough.
For the month of August while the gallery is closed, New York based artist Gary Rough has been in residence, using the space as his studio for a period of almost five weeks. 'Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, etc ...' comprises of a body of work produced, edited and adapted during this time.
Around the perimeter of Gallery No. 5, Rough exhibits A Premonition of a Future - an ongoing project to collect one thousand, nine hundred and eighty four copies of George Orwell's seminal novel '1984'. As opposed to acquiring new books, Rough has accumulated used or gifted copies each consistently passed through the hands of others. The collection to date now lines the walls of the gallery space with sections of the shelves lying empty for the remaining copies to be added.
Gallery No.9 showcases a selection of drawings from the 'Failed Pattern' series Rough has been working on in recent years, which consist of fragmented 'harlequin' patterned drawings on paper which break free from their prescribed regularity. The pattern spills from the page extending directly on to the gallery walls. Described as 'a practice in failure' these drawings explore the psychological resistance that ensues from deliberately forcing mistakes to create a disrupted order.
Born in Glasgow in 1972, Rough studied for a BA and MFA at Glasgow School of Art between 1991 and 1998. A former member of Glasgow art group Filthy Swan, Rough now lives and works in New York. Selected group exhibitions include ‘Le Deuil' (Galerie IFF, Marseille); 'Zenomap’ (Venice Biennale, Scottish Paviliion); ‘Size Matters’ (organised by Hayward Gallery Touring, London); ‘If Not Now’ (Broadway 1602, NY); ‘The Known and the Unknown’ (Galerie Nicolai Wallner, Copenhagen); ‘Electioneering’ (Forth Worth Contemporary Art, Texas), and ‘To Bring Forth and Give’ (Glasgow Print Studio). Rough has presented solos shows at, amongst others: Inverleith House, Edinburgh (Mantlepiece); PS.1 MoMA, New York (Who is Everything); Sorcha Dallas, Glasgow (Take Me With You / Glasgow International Festival of Contemporary Art); Fergus McCaffrey Fine Art, NY (Karabekian), and Yvon Lambert, Paris (Nothing is Enough). 2011 projects included solo shows at Sorcha Dallas, Glasgow and Number 35, New York and group shows at Hunter College Art Galleries, New York and Todd Madigan Gallery, California State University.
