Thea Djordjadze’s sculptures and installations consider the dimensions of space and time. For her
multipartite sculptural ensembles, the artist combines everyday materials such as ceramics,
cardboard, textiles and plaster with found objects which refer to protected inner space and feminine
working mode. She combines objects consisting of fragile materials with stable structures made of
wood or steel, reminiscent of bannisters, tables, or bookcases, as seen in her site-specific installations
at the South London Gallery in 2015. This testifies to the artist’s interest in the modernist architecture
and design of the early 20th century, themes she worked through at the 56th Venice Biennale in
2015, and develops further in this exhibition in the gallery’s cavernous main space making use of
architectural remnants. In the juxtaposition of objects often revealing human traces with spatial
dispositions created out of industrially made materials, she also makes reference to the sculptures of
Surrealism and Minimal Art, further inspired by an Eastern European folk tradition.
Sprüth Magers Berlin is concurrently presenting solo exhibitions by Craig Kauffman and
Alexandre Singh.
