HOW FAR HOW NEAR
19 September 2014 - 1 February 2015

Since World War Two, the Stedelijk has developed a distinguished reputation as a museum for international contemporary art. However, artistic developments emerging in large parts of the world were largely ignored. How Far How Near explores the backgrounds and reasons underlying this paradox.

The presentation encompasses painting, photography, video, graphic work and archival documents from the museum’s collection, alongside a number of works on loan. Also on view are recently acquired work by African and other artists, in conjunction with art created specifically for this occasion by Godfried Donkor and Lidwien van de Ven. How Far How Near also features a performance by Quinsy Gario and lectures by Porter McCray, Jonas Staal and Jean-Hubert Martin. The exhibition is part of Global Collaborations, a long-term project focusing on globalization and art.
