STEDELIJK & DE SCHOOL: TIJDGENOTEN
13 October - 27 November 2016
On Thursday, October 13, Amsterdam club De School presents a new art series entitled Tijdgenoten (Contemporaries). The first edition will be in collaboration with the Stedelijk and French/Algerian artist Mohamed Bourouissa.
In the upcoming year, De School will realize several art exhibitions in her building with contemporary artists in collaboration with various museums and institutes. Tijdgenoten (Contemporaries in Dutch) is a night where music, performances and art come together. For the first edition, De School is collaborating with Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and the French/Algerian artist Mohamed Bourouissa.
The Stedelijk Museum will present three video installations and one photo exhibition of Mohamed Bourouissa in De School, starting on October 13th. At the Stedelijk Museum, Bourouissa’s show Horseday can be seen until January 1st, 2017.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Mohamed Bourouissa (1978, Blida, Algeria) is known for his direct, imposing color photographs of young people and everyday life in the Paris suburbs. Bourouissa is fascinated by systems, how society is structured, and how social processes are activated. Unlike traditional socially critical photographers, he always works within and in collaboration with communities. This is visible in his project Légende, which can be viewed in the smoking area of De School and is based on tapes of set up hidden cameras that film illegal cigarette vendors working the Paris subway station of Barbès. Last year, the Stedelijk bought a photograph and a two-channel video by the French-Algerian artist Mohamed Bourouissa. Both works represent a facet of the project Horseday (2013-present). This autumn, the Stedelijk will present the works as part of a gallery-filling installation designed by the artist.
