7 June – 16 July 2005

Stephen Friedman Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of new works by American artist Mark Grotjahn.

Grotjahn’s paintings and drawings blur the boundaries between abstraction and representation. The artist combines numerous artistic languages and practices in his work. He believes in a contemplative approach to making art where external influences and internal logic amalgamate to produce work that is intuitive, intricately detailed and exceptionally beautiful.

For his first show at Stephen Friedman Gallery, Grotjahn exhibits new paintings and drawings from his ‘Butterfly Series’. These works show the artist’s passion for stark compositions and vibrant colours. In particular, Grotjahn inserts flat stripes in raw colours with multiple vanishing points to create works that are dynamic and multi-geometric. In Grotjahn’s work the viewer is at once challenged and mesmerised.

This exhibition marks Grotjahn’s first show in Europe. He has exhibited extensively in America. In 2005, Grotjahn had a solo exhibition at UCLA Hammer, Los Angeles. Recent group shows include: Conversations, Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; Pink, Gallery Min Min, Tokyo and I, Assassin, Wallspace, New York all in 2003 and 2004. In 2004, Grotjahn had a solo exhibition at Anton Kern Gallery, New York and participated in the 54th Carnegie International exhibition, Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh. In 2006, Grotjahn will be included in Painting in Tongues, Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles.

Stephen Friedman Gallery will be participating in Art Basel from 15 – 20 June 2005, Hall 2.1, Stand D12
