Toronto, ON – opening on Thursday, 27 November from 7 to 9 p.m. and continuing through to 10 January 2015, the Susan Hobbs Gallery is pleased to present Preuzmimo Benčić (2014), an experimental documentary film by Althea Thauberger.
Preuzmimo Benčić ; was shot within a former factory complex known locally as “Rikard Benčić ;” in the port city of Rijeka, Croatia. Over the course of six weeks, Thauberger, her crew, and a cast of 67 children performers between the ages of 6 and 13, occupied the complex to develop content for the film through improvisation, movement, and play. In their occupation of the space, the children perform the roles of workers, artists, and mayors interchangeably, abstractly mirroring the circumstances of the history of Benčić ; as well as its faint promise of economic recovery for the city, pending development as creative and hospitality industries.
Please note that the film is just under 60 minutes in length. The gallery will therefore screen the work at the top of the hour from 11 am until 4 pm every day.

Althea completed her BFA at Concordia University and her MFA at University of Victoria. She received the 2011 VIVA Award. Recent solo exhibitions include Audain Gallery, Vancouver; The Power Plant; BAK, basis voor actuele kunst, Utrecht. Numerous group shows include the 17th Biennial of Sydney; apexart, New York; The Liverpool Biennale and the National Gallery of Canada. Her work is held in several public collections including MuHKA Museum, Antwerp; Mills College Art Museum, San Francisco; National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa; Vancouver Art Gallery, Vancouver; and the Mackenzie Art Gallery, Regina as well as private collections in Vancouver, Toronto, Montréal, New York, San Francisco, San Diego, Los Angeles, Trento and Berlin. Currently, her work is included in L'avenir (looking forward), La Biennale de Montréal 2014 and Shine a Light: Canadian Biennial 2014 at the National Gallery of Canada.
Susan Hobbs Gallery is open to the public Wednesday to Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and by appointment. The gallery is located at 137 Tecumseth Street, Toronto.
